Distillation

Distillation of DMSO under reduced pressure is the preferred way to purify DMSO itself, and to remove water. Vacuum distillation may also be used to isolate reaction products from DMSO-based mixtures. DMSO forms no know azeotropes, which simplifies the distillation process. There are some precautions to observe when using distillation to isolate compoumds made in DMSO. Bulletin 107 discusses these, and provides VLE and boiling point / pressure data. Distillation may also be used to dry DMSO. Consult Bulletin 110 for distillation procedures for producing anhydrous material.
