The excellent solvent properties of Dimethyl Sulfoxide have lead to its use in Medical Devices. A number polymers are soluble in DMSO which allow polymers to be dissolved and then introduced into the tissue to provide the structure required for anatomical correction.

DMSO is currently being evaluated in drug eluting devices, where its solvent properties allow for high API concentration. These devices are designed for the controlled release of the drug in to the body.

There are currently three devices approved for use in North America that utilize DMSO technology.
