Gaylord Chemical Company L.L.C. is strikingly different from other manufacturers of Dimethyl Sulfide (DMS) and Dimethyl Sulfoxide (DMSO), in at least two major ways :
- Both products are synthesized "on-purpose" rather than as by-products of another chemical process.
- Competitive processes utilize methanol, a petrochemical.
- The Gaylord process uses lignin, a three-dimensional, phenolic biopolymer as the starting material to make DMS. Lignin is a renewable resource that comes from trees. Once some of the lignin is removed for the manufacturing process, the balance of the raw material stream is returned to an adjacent kraft paper plant.

In the early 1990’s, the DMS manufacturing train and the DMSO purification
system were updated, giving the company a modern production facility that
is well-maintained today.
