Performance Chemical Synthesis

Performance chemicals enhance the properties of  commodity materials such as polymers, textiles, rubber during processing or in the finished application.

Performance chemicals are typically grouped by functional area. For example, performance chemical include polymer additives, such as processing aids, blowing agents and mold releases.

UV light stabilizers, antioxidants, biocides and acid scavengers are used to increase the resistance to degradation during processing or application. A plethora of other performance chemicals are used to enhance/modify mechanical properties.

DMSO dissolves a tremendous array of organic molecules, carbohydrates, polymers, peptides, even many inorganic salts and gases. Enhanced loading levels and faster reaction rates translate to dramatic enhancement in process economics in performance chemical synthesis.

Biocides:

Bis-(trichloromethyl) sulfone is a broad-spectrum biocide, which is particularly effective against algae and fungi. Typical applications include the pulp and paper industry where it is approved for use as a slimicide in process water and as a material preservative. It is also used in cooling water systems, secondary oil recovery injection water systems and adhesives.

Hydraulic fluid additive

N,N',N"',N""-tetra-salicylidene pentraerythrityl tetramine. DMSO was used as the reaction solvent in the synthesis of N,N',N"',N""-tetra-salicylidene pentraerythrityl tetramine. The title compound is useful as an anticorrosive additive to hydraulic fluids (U. S. Patent 3,468,802).

The synthesis scheme is detailed in U. S. Patent 3,994,972.
